Joanne Scott

Joanne (Schmiege) Scott, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully at her home on February 22, 2026. Jo was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and went on to earn a degree in Social Work from Michigan State University. Neighbors while growing up in Kalamazoo, Jo married Phillip (Phil) in 1968. After moving to Kalkaska, where Phil was employed, Jo began her career teaching Head Start. After taking time off to raise her sons, she resumed working part time as a teacher at ABC Cooperative Nursery School. Jo later transitioned to a 17-year career with the Health Department as a social worker, where she provided maternal support to mothers and babies. Following her retirement, Jo volunteered at the Kalkaska High School Baby Pantry, the Festival of Trees, and served as a trustee on the Kalkaska Library Board. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Barbara Schmiege, and her brother-in-law, Walter Arnold. She is survived by her loving husband, Phil; her sons, Andrew (Kimberly) Scott of Midland, Michigan, and Steven (Katie) Scott of Kalkaska, Michigan; and her four cherished grandchildren, Ben, Sam, Luke, and Maddie Scott. She is also survived by her sisters, Marilyn Arnold of Chelsea, Michigan, and Kay (Gary) Campbell of Santa Rosa, California. Jo was kind, compassionate and had great empathy. Her favorite moments included reading, traveling, boating, and daily walks, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. A celebration of life luncheon and visitation will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11:30 AM at Kalkaska Church of Christ. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
