Obituary of Joe Brown, Sr.
Joseph "Joe" T. Brown, Sr. – Early on the morning of February 11, 2023, Joe passed away peacefully in his home in Lexington, S.C., after a long battle with lung disease. Joe was 78 years old.
Joe was born in Washington DC at Sibley Hospital on September 24th, 1944. He was the fifth son, and the seventh of nine children of Louis and Catherine Brown.
Joe lived most of his life in Maryland. Joe was a proud veteran, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked as a wholesale glass salesman for 40+ years. He was active in his church life and volunteer in his children's activities, including many years spent as an umpire for Little League, earning the position of Umpire in Chief. Joe also refereed for youth basketball. Joe enjoyed gathering family and friends together, especially at the annual Memorial Day cookout he and his wife Carol always hosted. He fondly remembered the many family camping trips they enjoyed and going to Stoney's for crab cakes.
When he retired, he moved to Lexington, South Carolina, where he spent his remaining years, happily traveling with Carol up and down the East Coast, as well as trips out West. Anyone that knew Joe, knew that Friday night meant dinner out with Carol, friends and family, where he would regale the staff at his favorite spots with stories, a smile and, of course, corny dad jokes.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Bolton Brown; siblings, Adele Morrow and Alice Raugh; children, Tammy Doswell (David), John Lester (Michelle), Barbara Lester and grandchildren, David Doswell (Jessica), Stephen Doswell (Lauren), Robert Lester, Josh Lester, Joseph "Wayne" Roberts, Storme Brown, Raine Lester, Carson Lester; his great grandchildren, Avery, Noah, and Chase; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, John J. Brown, Harry L. Brown, Charles F. Brown, Louis "Sonny" Brown, Jr., Jessie Cusick, Betty Postles; daughter, Tracy Brown Eckloff and son, Joseph "Joey" Brown Jr.
A memorial service will be held for Joe at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, March 5th, 2023, at Woodridge Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 138 Corley Mill Rd, Lexington, SC 29072. The family will receive friends for visitation immediately after the services.
A burial service will be held (at a date to be determined) in the Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland.
The family would like to extend their warmest appreciation for the care Joe received from his doctors and nurses at W.J.B. Dorn VA Hospital; his at home care-giver, Stacy Johnson, and his hospice nurse, Sheila Miller.
For those who wish to express their condolences, the family requests donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T.org) in lieu of flowers.
