Joe Carathers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hanner Funeral Service on Oct. 11, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Joe Carathers went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 10, 2025, surrounded by his family at the age of 75.
Joe was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy in life was his family. He never missed an opportunity to cheer them on from the stands or give them advice at the game. You could see the pride in his smile.
Joe worked at International Paper Company for 47 years when he retired in 2015. His priority with every task was to keep everyone safe. He was telling the kids work stories until recently. He always said to study the job and do it right the first time.
A lifelong fisherman, he found happiness and peace on the Lake, but you didn't expect him to disclose the best fishing spots. His tackle box may be closed but the stories and memories will remain in our hearts.
Joe will be remembered for his generous heart, comical personality and the way he made everyone feel special. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, family and simple joys – a reminder to slow down and enjoy each moment.
He is survived by his children, Tonya (Jeremiah) Howard, Jodi (Jonnie) Watkins, Corey (Erika) Carathers; his sister, Carolyn Segelhorst; thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a number of other family members and his best friend, Andrew Reed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen Carathers; sister, Ann Benefield; brother, Jackie Carathers; and grandson, Brayden Carathers.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Monday, October 13, 2025, at Hanner Funeral Service, with Bro. Gary Terry officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Hanner Funeral Service.
There will be a private family burial immediately following the service.
In honor of his love for fishing and in lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the Atlanta, TX ISD Fishing Club or your local school sports organization.
Gone fishing-resting now in the calm waters of Heaven.
