Mr. Joe Davis Henry was born on October 17, 1934 to Lewis Henry and Mrs. Helen Kinchen Gums. He was raised by his grandparents, Jesse and Charity Hogan, grew up and attended public schools in Austin, Texas. After joining the Air Force at the age of 18, he united in holy matrimony to Hazel Loretta Joseph Henry (Shaw) on February 28, 1959. To this union three children were born, Lorranda M. Slaughter, Gloria J. Manor (David), Veronica F. Nellum. Dad's Accomplishments 1.) Airman First Class (1958) – was awarded "The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service as a Ground Radio Operator" with U. S. 5th Special Forces Group, Republic of Vietnam. 2.) Staff Sergeant (1968) – was awarded an "Extension Course Institute Certificate" for successfully completing the "upgrade Training General Subjects Course." 3.) Technical Sergeant (1972-1973) – was awarded "The Air Force Commendation medal w/ first Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Service" as Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, Administrative Section, Consolidated Base Personnel Office, Personnel Division, 43rd Combat Support Group, Anderson Air Base and Guam. 4.) After 22 years of training and supervising as a Tech Sergeant, he decided to retire and return to his hometown of Austin, Texas to live permanently to become a productive citizen as a deputy, hall monitor of Fullmore Jr. High and other general services. 5.) He went back to school to study Criminal Justice and received several degrees - Southwest Texas State University, Bachelor in Applied Arts and Sciences. 6.) In 1980 he received a "Certificate of Appreciation" for outstanding service to "The Travis County Adult Probation Volunteer Services." 7.) In 1991, he completed the "Nonviolent Crisis Intervention" and was awarded the "Certificate of Proficiency" by the A.I.S.D. Division of Campus Police. And there are many more until he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2003. He departed this life on January 3, 2013. He leaves to mourn his passing one living sister named Alice Marie Young; sister-in-law Johnnie Mae Hogan; nephew Lewis Hogan, Jr.; first ex-wife, Hazel L. Joseph Henry (Shaw); three children, Lorranda M. Slaughter, Gloria J. Manor (David), Veronica F. Nellum; a second ex-wife, Mary Emma Cato-Lewis Henry; a third ex-wife, Ernestine Thompson Henry; twelve grandchildren, six step children, and a host of friends.
