Joel Carrier Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Serenity Meadows Memorial Park Funeral Home & Crematory - Riverview on Feb. 12, 2026.
Joel Crawford Carrier of Winter Haven, Florida, passed away at his home on February 1st, 2026. He lived with curiosity, compassion, and creativity, embracing each stage of his life with intention and presence. Joel was deeply committed to being fully engaged wherever life led him, leaving a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Millie Carrier; his great-niece, Carla Marie Carrier, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his partner of nearly ten years, Billy Bures; brothers Skip (Kathy) Carrier and Mark Carrier; niece Elizabeth (Luke) Dzwonek; and nephews Hoyt (Kim) Carrier III and Evan (Briana) Carrier. He will be especially missed by the youngest members of the family: great-nephews Henry Dzwonek and Connor Carrier, as well as great-nieces Emily Carrier and Brianna Redeker. Additionally, Joel leaves behind many family members spread across the country, including cousins Pat (Ray) Albrecht, Sarah (Tommy) Carr, Wendy Kimm, Gayle (Ed) Juhl, and Brad Mitchell.

As a testament to Joel's uncanny ability to cultivate deep and meaningful relationships, he will also be lovingly remembered by his vast network of friends, colleagues, and kindred spirits. Joel was widely adored and dearly loved. He was funny, charming, and passionate about what he believed in. He truly did live his life to the fullest-perhaps why our lives now feel a little emptier without him here.

Born in Ventura, California, in 1961, Joel was the youngest of Hoyt and Millie's three Carrier boys. He moved with his family to Iowa as an infant and later to Polk County, Florida, during his teenage years, where he attended Winter Haven High School. Following graduation, Joel enrolled at Florida State University, initially studying political science before earning a degree in communications.

After college, Joel settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he would spend the next three decades building a multifaceted and meaningful career. He began his professional life in public relations and broadcast promotion, which evolved into pursuing freelance writing, and finally to becoming an entrepreneur, opening Blue Door Antiques and Elements, a 3,400-square-foot vintage home furnishings store that he owned and operated for thirteen years.

Joel's life shifted once again in 2013, when he returned to Florida to support his mother as her health began to decline. What was meant to be a one-week visit became several years devoted to caring for her until she passed in 2017. Joel often reflected that those years together were among the most meaningful of his life.

Ready for a new chapter, Joel entered the world of real estate, where he found both purpose and joy. As a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty in Lakeland and a member of the Florida Spotlight Homes Group, he became known for his dedication, empathy, and tireless advocacy for his clients.

Most recently, Joel had moved on from real estate and was slowly re-entering the pre-owned retail market with his latest business venture, specializing in unique home furnishings and vintage clothing. He looked forward to expanding his brand and sharing his love for décor and fashion that had stood the test of time.

Throughout his adult life, Joel's constantly evolving career was always complemented by his deep engagement with the world around him. A lifelong follower of news and politics, he volunteered on political campaigns and was active with Rainbow Ridge, a local LGBTQ political organization. He also served as a board member for the West Central Florida Ryan White Care Council. Above all, he believed in dialogue over division and encouraged others to withhold judgment until they had truly walked in someone else's shoes.

Joel found happiness in yoga, cycling, reading literary nonfiction, writing, traveling, and-most importantly-spending time with friends and loved ones. He lived thoughtfully, loved deeply, and will be fondly remembered for his warmth, integrity, creativity, sense of humor, and unwavering belief in kindness.

To conclude, a quote from Joel:
Blessings to all. Remember, please, that EVERY day on this earth is special. Cherish them. And use them wisely.

Billy and Carrier family. Though we never have met, I have heard so many wonderful things about you all thru the years. My heart is broken for your loss.
Joel was a dear, dear friend, who I´ve known since the beginning of his Blue Door Days. He was one of a kind, had a personality bigger then life, and was genuinely kind... (and only a little salty)
I had the good fortune to have a wonderful conversation with him right before the holidays, he signed off with "I love you" which means even more now that he´s gone. My sincere sympathy and condolences to you all.

I went to high school with Joel and was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a wonderful person and will be missed! My daughter and I actually moved to Michigan shortly after he left, and have shopped at his lovely Blue Door Antiques in Grand Rapids. I did not know it was his creation. What a wonderful legacy he has left. Prayers for his family!
