Joel Fleming ObituaryJoel Fleming, 96, of Interlaken, NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
He was born in Pottsville, PA.
He attended school there and ultimately received his BA Degree from Penn State University.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Joel had a history of nearly 35 years in the field of Cable Television. He was President and CEO of the two Cable TV Divisions of Newhouse Broadcasting, a leader in the field of communications. The companies served subscribers in the Carolinas, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and New Jersey. He joined Newhouse Broadcasting in 1963 at their Radio Station in Syracuse, NY and in 1965 became the first employee of the newly formed Cable Division of Newhouse. Prior to that he was Vice President and General Manager of Ivy Broadcasting, a chain of Radio Stations in New York State.
Joel served as First Vice Chairman of the New York State Cable TV association. He was a Board member of Cable Sales, Inc., a Cable TV advertising sales firm and was on the Board of NewChannels Press Cable, a joint cable advertising and programming venture of Newhouse and Gannett Publishing. He was also a Director of CTAM, a cable industry group and was a member of the "Cable Pioneers".
Joel also won medals in basketball and track at both the New York and New Jersey Senior Olympics.
In 1990, Governor Florio of NJ appointed Joel as Commissioner of the NJ Public Broadcasting authority. He ultimately served as Vice Chairman of the Authority. He was also Chairman of the Board at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY and served on the Board of the Onondaga County Cultural Council.
After moving to Allenhurst, NJ he was elected Vice Chairman of the School Board and was a member of the Planning Board of the Borough. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra and the Scholarship Board of Monmouth University. He was presently a member of Deal Country Club.
Surviving is his beloved companion, Eleanor Milazzo of Interlaken: children, James of California, Andrew (Pam) of North Carolina, Richard of New York, and stepson Bruce (Kate) Kotz of North Carolina; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
