So sorry to hear of Joel's passing. The only time I ever sailed was on the Precocious with Tricia and Joel.
Thank you for some wonderful memories!

I am Robert Schamber, Joel´s oldest friend. Joel was born one day after me in 1950. This means I had seniority over Joel. I was to use this card many times during our lives together. I´ve known him since January 11th, 1957 when I moved from NYC to Bloomfield, NJ. We met on my first day at Brookdale School in the first grade. We immediately became good friends. As we began to know each other better he quickly became my brother from another mother. I would eat at Joel´s home at least once a week, a good excuse to get out and have an adventure, this became the norm. We loved to hang out and would conjure any scheme or excuse to justify being away from home and adult supervision. We would go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve to hang out and smoke cigarettes "we were twelve". We were inseparable during our school years until I went to work at Walgreen´s and Joel went to college. I spent numerous times at their shore home in Surf City where sailing and the yacht club were top priority for Joel and many times he asked me to crew for him. Joel turned into a Captain Bligh and short of mutiny or abandoning ship I pulled the "seniority card". In 1971 I moved from Bloomfield to Surf City, NJ and Joel and I decided to create a construction company. We continued to work together until 1977 when Joel along with Chuck McGowen and Ed Warmuth headed to Charleston, SC. I stayed in Surf City. In 1979 Joel asked me to come work with him again in Charleston, I arrived in May and worked until October. It was 104-106 degrees every day, no wind. I went back to Surf City to start my own construction business. Joel was a bit of a puzzle, an enigma you might say, he was his own best friend and worst enemy. Joel and I lived 730 miles apart for the next 45 years. We saw each other when we could and we were always in contact by phone, especially on holidays and birthdays. There are too many episodes in life to mention here, some good, some not so good, and you will have to catch up with us on the other side to learn about them. I loved him dearly. I will sorely miss him.
Respectfully Submitted, With Love, Always, Your Brother Bobby aka.Robert Schamber
PS. Thank You Chuck McGowan for carrying the cross when I could not be there. You certainly made all the difference in the quality and longevity of Joel´s life.
Sincerely, Bobby and Donna Schamber

Joel and I were buddies way back when. One night we took dates out sailing at LB Island, the weather got nasty and we ended up having to swim the boat back to shore. We reached shore in the morning and had some explaining to do.
Joel gave me my first car. Memories of going to NY to meet Gene who would take us out to fancy restaurants. He was a culinary writer and we always received VIP treatment.

I lived around the block from Joel during our time at Bloomfield High in NJ. We would get to school in a small red car he had that had a steering wheel that was taped up. We were in the same home room and ... since I was a sort of goody 2 shoes....whenever we came in late I would provide an excuse and....of course it was accepted. Much fun and memories made at his parents' beach house on Long Beach Island. Joel.....you never took me sailing!!!!!!
