Joel Henry Monsma, known affectionately as Joel to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, at the age of 81 in Hobe Sound, Florida. Born on October 1, 1943, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Joel's life was characterized by his loving nature, kindness, and an infectious sense of humor that brought joy to everyone around him.
Joel's journey through life was shared with his beloved wife, Constance Monsma, who stood by him through all of life's adventures and challenges. Together, they created a legacy of love and family that will be cherished forever. Joel's memory is also honored by his brother, Phillip Monsma, and he is predeceased by his sister, Virginia Moore.
A dedicated family man, Joel took great pride in his three sons, J. Chris Monsma (Eva) of Lexington, SC; Alexander N Monsma (Heather) of Hoover, AL; and Corey A Monsma (Monica) of Chelsea, MI. He instilled in them the values of hard work, compassion, and the importance of a good laugh. The light of his life shone brightly upon his grandchildren: Sophia, Maria, Braxton, Madison, Caleb, Nora, Ella, Avery, and Ashlyn Monsma, who will carry forward his spirit of joy and love.
Joel's academic journey began at Hope College, where he not only gained knowledge but also forged lifelong friendships. His professional life was marked by a successful career as an Independent Insurance Agent, where he earned the esteemed CPCU designation, reflecting his expertise and commitment to his field.
Beyond his work, Joel was a man of many passions. He had a profound love for music, which was a source of solace and inspiration throughout his life. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and excitement in fishing and hunting, activities that allowed him to appreciate the beauty and serenity of nature. Joel's laughter was a gift he shared freely, brightening the days of all who heard it.
Joel's commitment to his community was evident through his dedicated volunteering at St. John Chrysostom Greek Orthodox Church. His service not only fulfilled a spiritual need but also enabled him to connect with and support those around him. Joel's impact on his community was profound, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In every aspect of his life, Joel embodied the qualities of a truly good man. His loving nature made him a pillar of strength for his family, his kindness touched the hearts of friends and strangers alike, and his humor made the world a brighter place. His was a life well-lived, full of moments that will be remembered and stories that will be retold with smiles and warmth.
As we bid farewell to Joel Henry Monsma, we celebrate the remarkable man he was and the countless lives he touched. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us.
