Pagenkopf Funeral HomeJoel Bennie Vana, affectionately known as “Joe” or “Big Joe,” passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 17th, 2026 at the age of 64.
Joe was born on November 8th, 1961 in Milwaukee, WI to Suzanne Haessly and Dale Vana. The only boy among five sisters and the third of six children.
In 1980, he graduated from Nathan Hale High School and went on to attend UW Whitewater where he proudly played football. The same year, Joe met the love of his life, Colleen. From the moment they met they were inseparable. Together they built a life deep rooted in love, humor and unwavering devotion. A connection that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know them.
In 1986, Joe began what would become a long and dedicated 39-year career with the United States Postal Services, starting as a letter carrier in Malibu, California and ending as a Postmaster in Wales, WI. Before joining the Postal Service, he worked a variety of jobs – most memorably in pizzerias. His love for making pizza stayed with him for life, and his homemade pizzas became legendary among family and friends.
In 2002 Joe and Colleen moved into their family home where countless cherished memories were made. A devoted family man, Joe was deeply involved in his children’s lives and took immense pride in the family he and Colleen built.
Most people live for their work, but Joe truly worked to live. Outside of work he lived a life full of passions: cooking and baking – always with his concert videos on the TV or music in the background - camping, traveling, attending concerts, and cheering on Wisconsin sports. A true water bug, he was the happiest near the water. A music lover at heart, he attended Summerfest every year, spending entire days securing the front-row.
He was endlessly selfless – constantly putting others before himself. His acts of service were quiet but constant, a reflection of the love he gave so freely. Joe will be remembered for the strength he carried so effortlessly, the warmth with which he welcomed everyone, and his unmatched ability to make everyone feel like the most important person in the room. Anyone who met him was better for it. With a heart of gold and natural gift for leadership the sky was the limit with Joe in your corner. His life was a testament to his character, generosity, and the impact he had on everyone around him.
Joe had a calm, cool and collected presence paired with a silly nature that brought lightness to every moment. He was known for having a nickname for everything and everyone. He was a jokester to his core and could make light of any situation. His laughter often came at the expense of others’ pain.
Joe discovered his cancer by accident while doing what he loved – working outside on the pool. After his diagnosis, his faith brought him peace and comfort. Though his battle was short and difficult, it never dimmed his light-hearted nature. He faced every challenge with strength, determination, and his signature dark sense of humor.
No words can fully capture the enormity of the loss felt by Joe’s passing. He was his family’s rock in dark times and biggest supporter in the light. His presence alone brought comfort, and his quiet confidence gave his loved ones strength they didn’t know they had. People’s shortcomings never mattered to Joe. His sheepish smile never failed to light up a room, and his infectious laugh leaves an ache in its absence. Life simply will never be the same for those who knew him. While the pain will soften, his kind and gentle spirit is irreplaceable.
Joel is preceded in death by his mom, dad and stepdad Ernest Passehl as well as his brothers-in-law Thomas Brennan and Dan Verhalen.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Colleen; his children Joel and Kara (Peter) Mayer; and his beloved dog Kobe; sisters Kim (Tom) Mucha, Vicki Verhalen, Cori Crawford, Amy (Mike) Graff, and Ann Gallagher; his brothers- and sisters-in-law Bob (Kari) Brennan, Pat (Patti) Brennan, Terry (Joan) Brennan, Tim (Lisa) Brennan, Mike (Vicki) Brennan, Maureen Brennan, Kathleen (Brian) Nemitz; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Froedtert Hospital Staff in Wauwatosa - especially Dr. Chen – for the extraordinary care provided during Joe’s cancer journey.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, from 1:00 – 3:00pm at Pagenkopf Funeral Home, 2228 N. Silver Maple Lane, Oconomowoc, WI 53066 followed by a service.
