Joel Thomas Vance, affectionately known as "Toots", beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on September 6, 1954, in
Sacramento, California, Joel was the son of Royal and Phyllis Vance and was raised in
Davis, CA. From an early age, he brought energy, optimism, and a deep love of sports to everyone around him, qualities that became hallmarks of his life.
A proud graduate of California State University, Chico, Joel built his career in the sporting goods world with Blosser's Sports and Midtown Sports, where his passion for athletics and community naturally intertwined. It was no surprise to anyone who knew him that baseball held a special place in his heart-especially his beloved San Francisco Giants.
Joel married the love of his life, Gina, on February 12, 1983, and together they built a family and a legacy rooted in love, laughter, and togetherness. He is survived by his wife Gina Vance; daughter Andi Ruiz and son-in-law Tyler Ruiz; son Danny Vance and daughter-in-law Stefani Vance; and his cherished grandchildren: Preslei Ruiz, Renn Ruiz, Braxton Vance, Beckett Vance, Slate Ruiz, Sutton Ruiz, Stone Ruiz, and Baby Ruiz. He is also survived by his brother, Brad Vance, and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
A devout Catholic, Joel lived out his faith through generosity and service. He enthusiastically gave his time to youth sports, coaching countless young athletes and always believing in the potential of every child. At Cole Elementary, he proudly served as the school's first male PTA president-Go Bulldogs! Joel was also a founding member of Men's Senior League Baseball and played a pivotal role in launching Midtown Sports Youth Fall Baseball, leaving a lasting impact on the community he adored.
Joel had an unmatched gift for bringing people together. Whether serving as a camp counselor at Bob Mathias Sierra Camp, hosting gatherings, or cooking up something special in the kitchen, he made everyone feel welcome. His famous Bloody Mary's, legendary hospitality, and joyful spirit made every event memorable. He loved to travel the world with Gina, collecting memories, stories, and friendships wherever he went.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you visit your favorite bar and share a drink in Joel's honor, celebrating the joy and connection he brought to every room he entered.
Mass will be held in his honor on Monday, December 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Paul Newman Center Catholic Church. All who knew Joel are welcome to attend and celebrate a life so fully and lovingly lived.
May he rest in peace, and may his legacy of laughter, sportsmanship, and love live on in all who knew him.
