John was born December 23, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph Abbate & Olga Lang.
John was in the Army as a Specialist Fourth Class
from 1955-1958 when he was Honorable Released from Active Duty
On August 14, 1974, in Chicago He married his wife Marie Abbate (Werner)
He has lived in Arizona for over 47 years. He was retired, prior to his retirement he worked for the City of Willcox-Public Works Department He also volunteered and has umpired softball games, has done security at the festivities at Rex Allen Days, was very active in bowling tournaments and had participated in the Apple Festival for many years for the homemade crafts he has built in his garage.
His daughter's Lisa Smith (Mark) of Tucson, Michelle Ray (Kevin) of Chicago, and Nicole Farrell of Payson. His grandson Jonathan Abbate of Willcox and his grandchildren Jessica Jotzat, Marc Jotzat and Brandi Smith, survived him, along with various family members.
Memorial services will be held later in 2026
