John "Johnny" Cleveland Allen (74) of Cromwell, AL, passed away on February 6th, 2026. Born on January 14, 1952 (
Meridian, MS) to John Tuman Allen, Jr. and Anne Elizabeth Shotts Allen.
Johnny spent his youth in Cromwell surrounded by family, forests, and fields. This shaped his life, instilling strong family bonds and a love of the outdoors, especially the forests.
Upon graduating from Choctaw County High School in 1970, he went on to pursue an Associate degree in Forestry from Lake City Community College in Florida while also starting his own family.
Upon completion of his degree, Johnny returned to Alabama to join the Allen family's timber business in
Eutaw, AL and later in
Thomaston, AL. He loved riding the backroads to check the stands. He loved forests. It didn't matter if it was Alabama, Mississippi, or the Douglas-fir forests of Oregon, but he had a special place in his heart for those southern pines.
Johnny's family grew with his return to Alabama with Jenny, Katy, and J.R. joining Babs. Those girls kept him busy and could out talk him a mile a minute. He would listen and smile.
After retiring from the timber industry in the 1990s, he entertained new ventures and old hobbies. He continued to focus on spending time with family and good friends. He also expanded his "collections." He had no shortage of model trains and cars, tools, vinyl albums, cassette tapes, and other unique collectibles. Johnny never lost his love of American muscle cars, trains, and large machinery, and he never stopped dreaming of restoring his GTO Judge.
Johnny was a man of few words, but if you had the privilege of knowing him, you knew you were loved and important. He had a heart big enough for all.
Johnny is survived by daughters, Babs Allen, Jenny Allen, Katy Allen, and JR Allen Marshall, and grand children, Allen Dickey, Charles Dickey, James Marshall, and Robert Marshall, brother Leo Allen, and close cousins, Lee Allen and Carol Hollyhand.
Although Johnny is no longer physically with us, his light will keep shining bright through all of us. If you ever find yourself in a forest and see sunlight through the trees or if you hear the sound of a train whistle in the distance, know that Johnny is with you.
