John Almy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home on Jan. 31, 2024.
John J. Almy Jr., 81, of Binghamton, NY, died unexpectedly on January 27, 2024. He was the son of the late John and Grace (McCormick) Almy.
John is survived by his best friend and love of his life of 57 years, Marie Almy; his children, John Almy (Danielle), Stephen Almy, Daniel Almy (Peg), and Kate McCloe (Jeff). Three grandsons, Matthew Almy, Gabriel McCloe, and Nathan McCloe, and one great-granddaughter, Elara Almy. John is also survived by his brother Michael Almy (Pat), as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was a lifelong resident of Binghamton's Southside and a lifelong member of the Parish of Saints John and Andrew. He graduated from St. Patrick's Academy, class of 1960, and attended Broome Community College. After working for five years in industry, he began working at Binghamton University, where he worked in their computer center until his retirement.
To know John was to love him. He was a devoted husband, father, and "Poppy." He had immense love for his family, was always up for talks and laughs, and took great pride in his Irish heritage. John was lucky to visit Ireland twice in his life. He enjoyed Irish music, especially the great Irish tenor, John McCormack, and he was never known to refuse a Guinness or Irish whiskey.
John's kindness was unmatched. He was always happy to help others when they needed it. His generosity will extend after death because his wish was to donate his body to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y., for medical education and research.
At John's request, there will be no funeral or calling hours. Interment will be private and at the convenience of his family. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please do an act of kindness to keep his memory alive.
