John R. Atkinson, 75, of Beverly, Ohio, died on February 2, 2026 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 1, 1950 in Cambridge, Ohio, son of Carl R. and Martha E. Grier Atkinson. He had been employed at Central Ohio Coal Company for several years and later on he became a truck driver for several companies in the area. He graduated from Fort Frye High School in 1968 and attended Nelsonville Technical College. John served his country as a Sergeant in the US Air Force. He was a member of the Beverly Presbyterian Church, had been a longtime Beverly Village Council member and later became Mayor for the Village of Beverly. John loved nature and enjoyed riding around in his jeep and enjoying the outdoors. He was married on June 3, 1978 to Vickie L. Woodruff Atkinson who survives. Also surviving are two children, Alan Atkinson and his wife Ashley of Worthington, Ohio and Grace Nelson and her husband Derrick of Dry Fork, WV; five grandchildren, Jesse, Nettie, Leland, Anna and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly with Pastor Beverly Pottmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Beverly Cemetery with Military Services at the grave. Friends may call 5-7 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Beverly Waterford Rescue Squad or the Beverly Presbyterian Church, for the Chuck Wagon Backpack Program. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Kelli Cawley and the Marietta Memorial Hospital ICU nursing staff for their care of John.
