John A. Barnes, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in 1934, in Kansas City, MO, John lived a full and vibrant life, marked by his dedication to his family, his country, and his community.

John grew up in Kansas City, Missouri where he attended Pembroke Country Day School. After graduation he attended Yale University where he earned his engineering degree and later achieved his MBA at the University of Rochester, NY. John honorably served in the U.S. Navy for 7 years. His love for his country was only matched by his commitment to excellence in his professional life as a Civil Engineer for the Navy, from which he retired after a long and distinguished career.

John's life was a testament to the values he held dear: hard work, family, and faith. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his enduring kindness, and the love he so freely gave.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Julia A. Barnes. He was a devoted father to his son, John L. Barnes (Sharon), and daughter, Jennifer A. Hamer (Peter). His role as a grandfather to seven grandchildren; Kaitlin (Jack), Ryan (Erin), Kyle, Joseph, Caroline (Jay), Nicholas, and Meghan brought him immense joy, and he was blessed to see the family legacy he cherished grow with the addition of his 2 great-grandchildren, Gregory and Ava.

Please join us in celebrating the life of John A. Barnes-a true gentleman, a scholar, and a patriot. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Nativity Catholic Church, 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke, VA 22015 at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. He will be buried in a private ceremony at 2:00 PM at Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Fredericksburg, VA.
