John Batcher Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc. on Sep. 16, 2025.
Jack "Umpy" Batcher passed on Wednesday, September 10th. He was born and raised in Freeport, NY, by Rosemary and Thomas Batcher Sr., the oldest brother of Thomas and Rosemary, and loved oldest cousin to Chip, Kathy, and Judy. Proud friend of his childhood favorite pet, Rex. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 454 and spent time at Ten Mile River in Narrowsburg as an Eagle Scout.

He served in the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War, continued his career in the Army Reserves, and retired at the rank of Major. He worked in sales and insurance for the largest trucking companies in New York City, and loved to tell tales of his time with Mendy, Don, and the 4Gs. He also lived in Brentwood, NY, where he raised his two children, John and Cheryl. He enjoyed visiting with his cousin Chip and his family.

After retiring, he moved to Honesdale, PA, to be close to his daughter and his three grandchildren, Brinna, Mo, and Calvin. He was also able to enjoy visits with his cousins Judy, Kathy, and Kathy's family. He enjoyed his early retirement traveling with his grandchildren, taking trips to New Mexico to visit his sister Rosemary and her family. His hobbies included watching SpongeBob SquarePants and supporting his investment as a proud shareholder of the Green Bay Packers.

In 2011, with his daughter Cheryl, they opened Camp Umpy's Bagels & Stuff in Honesdale, PA. He was happy to have established a legacy of feeding the masses and being a Happy Camper.

Umpy will be loved and missed by his family, friends, George the Rabbit, The Bear, Microwave, Paul Revolver, and The International Camp Umpy Community.
