John Edmund Berger, age 79 of Frazee, MN went to meet his Heavenly father on July 18, 2024.
John was born on March 29, 1945 to Ignatius and Georgia (Mayfield) Berger in Detroit Lakes, MN.
He was united in marriage to Katherine Schultz on June 17, 1967. The couple moved to St. Paul, MN where John worked as a millwright until he was inducted into the US Army, serving from 1967 to 1968. He served one year in Vietnam. This is where most of his health problems began, after being exposed to Agent Orange.
After returning from the service, John and Kathy moved to Bethel, MN. He then returned to his millwright job. John also drove bus and delivered fruit for Brooks, Inc. His mill work was at various powerplants throughout the US. He then went fulltime at Whirlpool, and then to CVN.
The family’s last move was to Frazee, where they still reside today. John spent time working at Land O’ Lakes until he was declared fully disabled in 2011. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time watching his grandchildren, or the time they spent watching him.
John liked fixing old things such as tractors, cars, and lawn mowers, claiming that new things were too complicated these days! He and Kathy took joy in travelling across the U.S., mostly driving because John did not like to fly. He liked to try new restaurants and stop at casinos. Most importantly, his favorite visits were with his grandchildren. God and grandchildren were his fight to live.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathy; son, Daniel John Berger of Frazee; daughter, Jodi Kay (Tim) Lammers of Horace, ND; five grandchildren, Melissa Berger of Frazee, Joshua Lammers of Barnesville, MN, Tyler Lammers of Horace, Eric Lammers of Fargo, ND, and Samuel Lammers of Horace; brothers, Roger (Irene) Berger of Anoka, MN and Mark (Dana) Berger of Rochert, MN; three sisters, Patricia (William) Schneider of Chandler, AZ, Rita (Arville) Thompson of Volga, SD, and Susan (Rodney) Winters of Detroit Lakes, MN; sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Geoffrey) Rund of Dalton, MN and Jeri Berger of Detroit Lakes; brothers-in-law Lloyd (Linda) Schultz of Perham and Gary (Barb) Schultz of New York Mills; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Kulzer of Detroit Lakes and Juliana Matson of Detroit Lakes; along with his nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ignatius and Georgia Berger; parents-in-law, Leonard and Martha (Krueger) Schultz; four brothers, Stanley, Paul, Michael, and Neil; brothers-in-law, James Kulzer and Warren Matson; niece, Robianne Schultz; and his nephew, Jeff Quittschreiber.
