John Bottorff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scott Funeral Home on Jan. 27, 2026.
John Bruce Bottorff, age 72, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of a life well lived. Bruce was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Garland and Ruth Bottorff, who instilled in him the values of hard work, curiosity, and quiet kindness that defined him throughout his life.

Bruce was a proud graduate of Madison Consolidated High School, Class of 1972. Shortly thereafter, he began a career that reflected both his technical brilliance and steady dedication. He spent many years in public broadcasting, serving in a variety of roles and ultimately retiring in 2010 as a broadcast engineer. His work behind the scenes helped bring information, education, and connection to countless people, and he took great pride in the craft he had mastered.

Above all else, Bruce cherished his family and the life he shared with his wife, Janice. Married for 50 wonderful years, Bruce and Janice built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Some of their most treasured memories were made saltwater fishing together in the Everglades, where Bruce found peace in the rhythm of the water and joy in the simple beauty of nature. He was never happier than when he had a fishing line in hand and Janice by his side.

Bruce also had a deep love for classic rock music, which provided the soundtrack to many moments throughout his life. He especially enjoyed playing his guitar, finding joy and relaxation in strumming familiar tunes and revisiting the songs that shaped a generation.

Bruce was a gentle soul with a thoughtful spirit, known for his steady presence, quiet humor, and deep loyalty to those he loved. He shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Toby, who was a constant companion and source of comfort.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Janice Bottorff; his sister, Mary Ann Bottorff of Madison, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will fondly remember his kindness, wisdom, and the calm strength he brought into their lives.

Memorial visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway. Memorial services celebrating Bruce's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the conclusion of the visitation, also at the funeral home.

Bruce will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the quiet moments, shared adventures, and enduring love he leaves behind.
