SCHENECTADY - John M. Buell, 66, a friend to all, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, after spending a joyful evening in the company of family and close friends.
Born in Niskayuna, John was the son of the late George and Alice (Clough) Buell. He graduated from Linton High School in 1976 and went on to study at Roger Williams University and Union College, ultimately earning his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in biology.
John dedicated 35 years to the United States Postal Service, beginning as a mail carrier and later becoming a familiar and friendly face to many as a clerk at the downtown Schenectady branch. His warm spirit and easy conversation made him a bright part of many people's day.
A lifelong learner, John had an insatiable appetite for knowledge, especially in history and nonfiction. He was often seen walking the streets of Schenectady, book in hand, deeply absorbed in whatever he was reading. Even after retirement, he continued taking courses at Union College, always seeking to expand his understanding of the world.
John found great joy in the kitchen, a passion that began in his mother's home and blossomed throughout his life. He was an accomplished baker - particularly known for his wedding cakes made lovingly for family and friends. A dedicated gardener, he was often found enjoying the beauty of Jackson Gardens.
John treasured his family and friends; he kept them close to his heart. Above all, John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and gentle soul. His gift for connecting with people turned friends into family, and strangers into friends. He touched many lives with his thoughtful nature and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John was predeceased by his parents.
He is survived by his devoted brothers, George (Linda) Buell and Bob (Lynn) Buell; loving nieces and nephews, Christy (Mark) Guidetti, Eric (Lindsay) Buell, Timothy (Kim) Buell, Matthew (Rachel) Buell, Devlin Rooney, Melissa Rose, and Julia (Scott) Raymond; cherished great-nieces and nephews; many special cousins and friends, all whom he considered Fra-mily.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 6:00pm at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, 501 Union Street, with Fr. John Califano, officiating.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.
To remember John as he would love, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Proctors Theater atproctors.org or Union College for the care and maintenance of Jackson Gardens at union.edu/give.
