John Robert Burkert, age 88, of Butler, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Butler Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Zelienople, on September 19, 1937, and was the son of his late parents, William Burkert and Mary Jane (Keefer) Burkert. He married Lillian Mary (Rice) Burkert on June 1, 1957. They were married for 68 years.
John worked as an Engineer for 40 years until his retirement in 2000. After retirement, he continued to utilize his engineering/drafting skills well into his 80s, which brought him enormous enjoyment.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather & great grandfather. He was passionate about outdoor activities such as hunting, camping and golfing, enjoyed playing cards, spending time traveling in his motorhome with his wife, children and grandchildren as well as five years spent in Florida living the life.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his five children, Sherry (Kevin) McGahan of Cranston, RI, Cindy (William) Sye of Zelienople, Jeffrey (Lynn) Burkert of Chicora, Todd (Laurie) Burkert of Crown Point, IN, and Beth (Charles) Van Buren of Butler; grandfather to 16 grandchildren, Kelly and Daniel McGahan; Tonya, Ashley, and Dustin (Stephanie) Sye; John (Mindy), Joshua (Jackee), Jeremiah (Tasha) and Justin Burkert; and, Brandon & Braxton Hilderbrand; great-grandfather to his 13 great grandchildren, Sophia, Mason, Amara, Saylor, Jacob (fiancé Cierra), James, Jonathan, Olivia, Lillian, Evelyn, Carter, Trey and Macey; with one new great-great-grandchild, expected soon; and, his siblings Patricia Judd, Amy (Burt) Davis, Terry (Bambi) Burkert and Iva (William) Ehrhart.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Christian (Butch) Burkert, Kenneth (Craig) Burkert and James (Jim) Burkert.
No formal services will be held as per his wishes.
Arrangements were entrusted to Boylan Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Inc., 856 Evans City Rd., Renfrew, PA 16053.
