John E. Burwell

John Edward Burwell, 75 of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026 surrounded by his family. John was the beloved husband of 53 years to Susan Burwell, (nee Schott). He was the cherished father of Katie (Rob) Messmer and Laura Burwell. He was the adored Poopa of grandchildren Eddie, Chloe, and Nolan and the much-loved brother to sisters Mary Ellen (Earl) Sheppard-Pangallo and Myra Jean Burwell and many loving nieces, nephews and life-long friends. John was preceded in death by his brother Bob Burwell and parents, Bob and Fran. Also preceded in death by his adoring mother and father-in-law, Libby and Art Schott.

John was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he built a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and service. He attended Guardian Angels School, McNicholas High School, and the University of Cincinnati—institutions that shaped his character and fueled his lifelong love for learning and sports.

An accomplished athlete, John played baseball, captained the basketball team, and ran cross country at McNicholas High School. His passion for basketball carried on to the University of Cincinnati, where he proudly played for the Bearcats. Sports were not just a pastime for John; they were a source of joy, discipline, and lifelong camaraderie.

John honorably served as a proud member of the Army National Guard and went on to build an impressive professional life. He founded four successful businesses and later retired as a highly respected and accomplished electrical supply sales representative. His work ethic, determination, and integrity were evident in everything he pursued.

John’s Catholic faith was central to his life. He was rarely seen without a scapular around his neck and a rosary in his pocket—quiet symbols of the deep devotion that guided him daily and sustained him through every season of life.

He found his greatest happiness surrounded by those he loved. John cherished time at the beach, boating, and tubing with his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. A devoted Cincinnati sports fan, he enthusiastically supported the Bengals, Reds, and the University of Cincinnati, cheering them on with unmistakable pride.

John was truly the life of the party. He always had a warm smile, a story ready to tell, and thoughtful advice to offer. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with others and could make a friend wherever he went. His laughter, kindness, and genuine interest in people left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Above all else, John deeply loved and treasured his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was endlessly proud of them and never missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events and activities, celebrating each moment with enthusiasm and joy.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Arden Courts of Anderson, Bethesda North Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Hospice of Cincinnati. Your kindness, dedication, and care brought comfort to John and his family and will always be remembered with appreciation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Guardian Angels Church, 6539 Beechmont Avenue. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Cincinnatior the Alzheimer’s Association.
