John Lang Button Jr., known to family and friends as Jack, died on January 22 in
Milford, Connecticut. He was born on April 7, 1932, in Ithaca, New York.
Jack learned to sail on Cayuga Lake and went on to spend much of his life racing Star Class boats. Jack competed in dozens of regattas and championships, and even World Championships. He was widely respected as a disciplined sailor known for sailing fast and smart. He also served in leadership roles, including as Commodore of the Milford Yacht Club.
Jack was a mechanical engineering executive, retiring as a Vice President at UE Precision Sensors in Milford. Precision also defined him as a craftsman. He could build or repair nearly anything, even restoring their 1909 Milford home with meticulous attention to detail.
Jack enjoyed golfing with his son John, daughter Cathy, and stepson Jay. He was an avid fan of UConn women's basketball. He was funny and kind, with an easy charm that people were drawn to.
Jack is lovingly remembered by his partner and wife of 42 years, Lois Barr. He will be deeply missed by his children: Catherine Button, John Lang Button III, and Susan Kane (Timothy Gotsick); his grandchildren Emma Kane, Dana Curran (Kevin Curran), Jessica Button, and Jennifer Bunnell (David Bunnell); his great-grandchildren Joseph Ignacio, Cash Curran, Oliver Curran, Daniela McGravy, and Brady Newquist. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Jay Webster (Patricia Webster), and Susan Laden, and step-grandchildren Laura Webster, CJ Laden, and Bethany Laden.
Those who knew Jack remember a man whose life followed a steady course, shaped by wind, work, and the satisfaction of building something that would endure.
A celebration of life will be held in summer 2026.
