John Alfred Calvi, 82, of Occidental, California, passed away peacefully on July 1, surrounded by loved ones including Darlyn, his wife of 62 years.

Born in Sebastopol California, on May 30, 1943 to Giovanni Enrico “Rico” Alfieri Calvi and Emma Rose Triulzi. John lived a full life marked by discipline, laughter, hard work, and deep devotion to family, friends and church community.

John occasionally started his mornings by checking the local obituary page to see who he knew — and would joke with a grin that he was relieved each time his own name wasn’t there. Now, at last, he’s made the list.

He was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Darlyn Blair, where they met at Analy High School in Sebastopol California. They shared more than six decades together, from innocent days walking her to class while she proudly wore his FFA jacket, to partners who faced life’s greatest joys and heartbreaks side by side and with each sorrow it only deepened their unbreakable bond.

Over his wonderful 82 years, John wore many hats — and every single one with love. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a playful grandpa and great-grandpa, a compassionate brother, and even once a “delivering physician.” He served his country as a sailor on the navy ship the USS Walke, worked tirelessly for the local utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric “PG&E”, and found countless quiet ways to give back to his community.

But some of our favorite memories are of him at home: tending his 30+ fruit trees, racing the gophers for his prized chard, filling jars with summer’s bounty, making his apple yummy, and flipping the most unforgettable blueberry pancakes from berries he picked himself. John lived with discipline and dedication, but above all, he lived with a heart full of love for his family and friends.

He loved nothing more than being with family — loading grandkids on the ATV for what he called “going crazy,” going on hikes with his family and one time slipping river rocks into his son’s backpack for a laugh, and helping others trace their roots as a volunteer at the local FamilySearch center in Santa Rosa, California. His own journey to Italy helped reconnect long-lost branches of family across generations and oceans. Through his efforts to rebuild, connections have blossomed, and relationships have deepened.

Together, hand in hand, John and Darlyn faced life’s greatest trials, including the heartbreaking loss of two infant children in back-to-back years. Even through such profound tragedy, John and Darlyn’s love remained unshakable, a testament to their strength and devotion. It was her hand he held through it all — including the many brushes with fate that seemed to prove he had more than a few lives. John had tickets for the doomed TWA Flight 800 but changed plans shortly beforehand saving his and his two sons lives, walked away from a head-on collision, overcame skin cancer, and even survived being threatened at gunpoint while on the job.

John is survived by Darlyn, his loving wife, along with his children, Stacy Marting (Charles), John Anthony “Tony”, Melissa Humphreys (Michael), Jason (Kimberly), Joseph “Joe” (Gabriela), Jesse (Katharina), grandchildren; Zack, Ryan, Vanessa, Jacob, Kaylee, Justin, Giuliana, Emma, Sarah, Gina, Malia, James, Giada, Hayden, Sage, Giovanni, Lyla, great-grandchildren; Arley, Evelyn, Millie, Liam, Kayden, Madison, Tyson, Honor, Maybel, Joel, Evangeline, siblings and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rico and Rose, his brother, Henry, and John’s two sons, Jacob Robert Lansing Calvi and Joel Christopher Calvi.

A funeral service will be held on July 5 at 2 PM at White Pine Funeral Home 753 S. 100 E. Logan, Utah 84321. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor John’s memory by lending a hand to someone in need, sharing your own family stories, and creating joyful moments with those you love. One of the last pieces of advice he offered was simply to be kind to others, and we hope to carry that spirit forward in every life we touch.
