John Robert Colaprete, beloved family patriarch and friend to many, passed away on March 30. Born on July 7, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the youngest of six siblings of Joseph and Sophia Colaprete. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Catherine Mary, their cherished children Lauren Howard (and husband Kevin) and Adrian (and wife Whitney) and adored grandchildren, John, Teal and Warrior. John graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Niagara University and served his country as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. When he was released from duty, he began a career as a restauranteur. He was one of the founders of the iconic, Virginia Beach landmark restaurant, The Jewish Mother. In honor of the many years he served the Beach community, he was named Citizen John. He also created and owned a small boutique resort in Jamaica that attracted a coterie of international guests. And for years and years he was an avid handball player, competing with players from around the country. John is remembered by his family as the "father of all fathers," the "teacher of all teachers," a giant of a man who lived a life filled with warmth, kindness and deep caring. He could often be heard saying to a person, "I'm glad you were born."
We will have a Celebration of life for Papa John Colaprete Saturday, April 6 at 3:00 at Cape Teal Farms, Eastern Shore.
