John Charles Conlon, age 77 (born November 15, 1945), of Glen Mills, PA, passed away on May 3, 2023, at Rose Court at Maris Grove Senior Living Community. Born in Canton, OH, and raised in Broadview Heights, OH, John spent the past two years at Maris Grove, previously residing in Blue Bell Country Club for over 25 years. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH (class of 1963), and entered Borromeo Seminary in Wickliffe, OH, before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Akron, followed by his master's from St. Louis University. John then joined the United States Army and served two tours during the Vietnam War. After receiving his discharge from the military, John continued his education and achieved his PhD in statistics from Florida State University. John returned to the University of Akron as a professor, and it was there he met his wife, Mary. John went on to be employed as a biostatistician for 40 years (working on clinical trials for various pharmaceutical companies, including Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK, Allergan, U.S. Bioscience, and Covance), retiring in 2018.
He was a member of St. Helena Catholic Church in Blue Bell, PA, and later of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Ambler, PA, where he served as a parish cantor and sang in the community with the church choir. He also loved to sing as a member of the Norristown Chorale. His education and career gave him the opportunity to live in nine states all across the country, from the Midwest and the South to both coasts. He had several opportunities to travel internationally, including to Ireland, Israel, and Vietnam. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, as well as an accomplished Sudoku and crossword solver. He was extraordinarily passionate about community service and charitable giving. He was a brilliant mind and a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who was quick to laugh, eager to help, and who truly believed the best about everyone he met.
In addition to his parents, Francis "Red" Patrick and Mary Josephine Gulling Conlon, John is preceded in death by a brother, William Conlon, who passed away in 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Ambelang Conlon; two sons, Joseph (Christina) Conlon, MD, and John Christopher Conlon; two brothers, Thomas (Deborah) Conlon and Joseph (Diane) Conlon; and a granddaughter, Josephine Conlon.
