John J. Cornyn, 91, entered eternal life on February 14, 2025.
John was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Patrick and Bridget Cornyn, nee McGorty (formerly of County Leitrim, Ireland). The youngest of three boys, John attended Catholic schools and served as an altar boy. His love of the outdoors began with summer trips to Coney Island and his Aunt Mary's farm in Newburgh, NY. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1962. After his Honorable Discharge, John moved to Staten Island, where he began his career at the U.S. Post Office in Manhattan. He traveled the U.S. and many cities in Europe- enjoying good food, music, and conversation everywhere he went. He was a member of the Staten Island Catholic Club and there met the love of his life, Roberta Crane (Bobbie). The two were married in 1967 and soon welcomed their two daughters. Leaving Staten Island, John and family settled in High Bridge and then Somerville, New Jersey where he worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service in Somerville for over thirty years.
A devout Catholic, John was an active member of the Holy Name Society at The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Somerville. John's life was one of faith, love, and dedication to his family. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. John cherished quality time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. Pop-Pop and Nana were the proudest of grandparents and attended every sporting event, concert, and award ceremony for their grandchildren. They also volunteered at Immaculate Conception Schools in Somerville and Annandale and taught CCD at Our Lady of Lourdes, Whitehouse. Pop-Pop's Irish eyes were always smiling and he was the ultimate host. Every day, John made time for praying the Rosary with Mother Angelica and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbie, with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage, and his dear brothers, Paul and Frank.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Karen Formisano and her husband Bill, and Allison Cornyn; his adored grandchildren Liam, Evan (Mercedes), Aidan, & Colin Formisano and Lucy Grace & Kevin Jonathan Cornyn; as well as his dear nieces; his beloved cousins Kay and Pauline; and his Catholic community of friends at Centerbridge II.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux R.C. Church, Bridgewater.
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Pregnancy Aid Center 59 Thompson St, Raritan, NJ 08869
