John D. Cottrell, 63, of Monticello passed away Monday, June 10, 2024 at IU Health White Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his loved ones. He was born March 31, 1961 to Roy Cottrell and Violet (Humphrey) Hughes in Zanesville, Ohio.
He worked for many years as a caregiver for Rescare. John’s life revolved around his children and grandchildren. He loved going to baseball games to cheer on his 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters when they played. He was at every family gathering, mainly because he was the one that wanted to host them because he loved being around everyone. He had a huge garden every year knowing he wouldn’t be able to eat all the stuff he grew, but that didn’t bother him because he always called the neighbors down to pick whatever they wanted from it. Tennis was always on the t.v. whenever you walked into his house, even if it was old and he had already watched that match. John loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and Nascar as well. Always gave his kids crap about liking the Colts and Cowboys. Before his health declined, we would go to Turkey Run and walk the trails. He always had cookies and milk for the grandkids whenever they would get off the bus, that is always where they went knowing he would already have the glass of milk poured and cookies setting out for them. He and little Roy would always eat Junior Mints together. He kept boxes beside his chair knowing he would come in and want some. John will be missed dearly by many.
John is survived by his mother, Violet Hughes (Jerry); children, Erin McCollum(Michael), Jeremy Cottrell, Lacy Cottrell (Garland), Lindsey Thompson (Nick), Jona Sheline, and a bonus son, Sam Norfleet; two sisters, Donna Mann, and Diane Smith; brother, Joe Cottrell; grandchildren: Nicholas, Kylie, Jonathan Thompson, Ashlynn McCollum, Brooklyn and Colton Sheline, Jay, Charles, Violet and Olivia Cottrell, and Little Roy Cottrell.
He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Cottrell; partner, Larry “Junior” G. Coles; an infant sister, Judy Ann, and brother, Danny Cottrell.
