John V. COYLE

COYLE, John V. Of Boston and Cape Cod, December 13, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Deirdre (McGrath) Coyle. Devoted father of MaryEllen Browne, Deirdre Coyle, Catherine Coyle Fross, and John Coyle. Loving grandfather of Nicholas, Isabel, Jack, Aedan, and Libby. Cherished son of the late John V. Coyle and Mary Ellen (Coghill) Coyle.

Born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland, March 28, 1934, John-known to all as Vinny-was a graduate of St. Gerald's College and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where he later received the Distinguished Graduate Award. He completed medical training at the Lahey Clinic and Boston City Hospital and became the youngest Chief of Medicine at Quigley Memorial Hospital. He also served as Director of Medical Education and as a clinical professor at Harvard Medical School and Tufts School of Medicine.

Dr. Coyle later transitioned into insurance medicine, serving as Medical Director and Vice President at Sun Life of Canada until his retirement.

A lifelong leader of the Boston Athletic Association, he served as president from 2000 to 2004, and remained deeply committed to the Boston Marathon, including providing lifesaving medical care during the 2013 bombing. He also forged a lasting bond between the B.A.A. and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, bringing nearly 300 Irish medical students to participate in the Boston Marathon over 27 years.

A man of quiet faith, deep generosity, and steady determination, Vinny will be remembered for his devotion to family, his striking blue eyes, and his mellifluous Irish accent that could instantly draw people in and hold them there.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2026.
