Colonel (Retired) John William Cummings, U.S. Army, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in
Griffin, Georgia.
John was born in
Bonham, Texas to William Curlee Cummings and Amateene May Cummings. John graduated from Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas, in 1961; he graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, in 1969, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, and on that date was also commissioned into the US Army; he later completed his MBA from Western New England College. While in the Army, he completed his residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Brooke Army Medical Center; he also completed the Command and General Staff Officer's Course, in 1982. He served in the Army for over 25 years and was Director of Pharmacy in several Army hospitals in the states, as well as three tours in Germany. Upon retirement from the Army in 1995, he went to work for Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company, for eight years.
John is survived by his loving wife, Linda Casey Cummings, his high school sweetheart; they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, having shared a wonderful life together! He is survived by his son, Christopher Cummings (Katherine), of Toronto, Canada; grandchildren, Emily Kate, Jack, and Sarah Cummings; his son, Clay Cummings, of Lake Martin, Alabama; daughter-in-law, Stacie Cummings, of Alpharetta, Georgia; and granddaughter, Cate Cummings. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Ruth Ann Wofford, and brother, Joe Don Cummings.
John was a member of the First Baptist Church,
Griffin, Georgia, where he served as a deacon. He also served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, at several different locations, and volunteered at the Abundant Life Soup Kitchen. He was very active in sports, having played high school football, and later enjoyed skiing, tennis, pickleball, and skeet shooting. He was an avid reader and was quite the history buff. He had a great sense of humor which he shared with family, friends, and professional colleagues as well. While living in Germany, he and Linda loved the opportunity to travel throughout Europe; their favorite was camping in the spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. John was very proud to be a native-born Texan and always considered Texas to be home! He was a loyal fan of the Texas Longhorns and eagerly shared the "Hook'em Horns" sign with everyone.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the Welcome Center of First Baptist Church, followed by a memorial service in the Sanctuary. He will be laid to rest, with full military honors, at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that contributions be made in his memory to
