John Willliam Curry

John Willliam Curry was born May 21, 1932 in Newark, NJ. He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He passed away peacefully at home, on January 3, 2026.
John was the beloved son of Sweet Curry Edwards and Perk Curry. He graduated from Charlton Street Elementary School and Arts High School (1950).
John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950. He had an interest in becoming a paratrooper; so, he volunteered to join an airborne outfit. After completing the necessary training at Fort Benning, Ga, he earned his paratrooper wings and was assigned to the 188th Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
After leaving the service, John was employed with Emerson Quiet Kool as an air conditioning technician.
John married his high school sweetheart, Josephine, on June 17, 1956 and from this union came two daughters.
John was employed by the U.S. Post Office in East Orange from 1958-1988, retiring as Superintendent of Window Services. John then decided to work part-time as a Postmaster contractor, at the East Orange V.A. Hospital until 2011.
John was a member of the "Triple Nickels" a black paratrooper organization, "The Scarabs", and "The Optimists" club. He was a faithful member of St. John's Baptist Church for 47 years. John resided in Scotch Plains, NJ for 52 years and relocated to Florida for approx. 3 years.
John leaves to mourn, his lovely wife of 69 years, Josephine; his two daughters; two grandsons, three granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at St. John's Baptist Church, Scotch Plains, NJ on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026. Wake: 10 AM, Funeral: 11 AM
