John Joseph DeGroot Jr., 74, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, after an extended illness with Bulbar ALS. He was born on January 18, 1951, in Paterson, New Jersey, to the late John Joseph DeGroot Sr. and Rita Jobeless DeGroot.

John married the love of his life, Rebecca Elliott DeGroot, on June 18, 1978. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rebecca; his son, Timothy Elliott DeGroot (Jennifer); and four cherished grandchildren: Isaac Ryan DeGroot, Natalie Camille DeGroot, Caroline Elliott DeGroot, and Hudson Joseph DeGroot. He is also survived by his two sisters, Patricia Maguire (Robert) and Marilyn Davis (Edwin); his brothers-in-law, James Kenneth Elliott and Franklin Edward Elliott; and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, caregivers, and dear friends.

John graduated from Florida Atlantic University in December 1972, where he pursued a career in education, teaching fourth grade. He later earned his Masters of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1983. While at UNCG, he met Becky through a mutual friend-an encounter that would change his life forever. John often said he earned both his Master's degree and his "Masterpiece."

John dedicated his professional life to serving children. He taught third grade at Archer Elementary School and General Greene Elementary School before becoming a guidance counselor at Frazier Elementary School, all in Greensboro, North Carolina. He served as a guidance counselor at Frazier Elementary from 1983 until his retirement in 2010, a total of 27 years. Frazier Elementary always held a special place in John's heart. His love for children extended beyond the classroom, as he faithfully served in children's ministry until he began losing his voice. Even then, children were drawn to him, and he to them, as he never lost his desire to bring smiles to their faces.

From childhood to his final breath, John was known for his strength through adversity, unwavering faith, and enduring sense of humor. TO GOD BE THE GLORY. John lived a powerful testimony of faith, honoring the Word of God in all things. He had a deep love for Scripture, sermons, Bible studies, and prayer. His joy was infectious and touched everyone around him. Whether relaxing in the hot tub, solving word puzzles, reading, playing games with family and friends, or traveling, John's greatest purpose was always to glorify God and love others well.

John possessed one of the most sincere, loyal, and gentle hearts. His love for his wife, family, and all whom he encountered was evident through his warm smile, encouraging spirit, and joyful humor. His legacy of faith, love, and service will live on in the many lives he touched. John is eating Butter Pecan ice cream and dancing in Heaven waiting on us! John: "Jesus, you are one AWESOME cool dude! Two thumbs up!"
