John J. Deily, Jr., of Somerset passed away on Sunday, February 4th at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 83.
Born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he lived in Queens and Valley Stream, New York before moving to Somerset, New Jersey in 1977.
John attended Liberty High School in Bethlehem, graduating in 1958. He also graduated the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics with an Associates Degree in Specialized Technology, the Academy of Aeronautics with and Associates in Applied Science, and the New York Institute of Technology with a Bachelors of Technology. He also served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1966.
He was employed by United Air Lines for over 30 years as an A/P Mechanic and Designated Trainer at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports, retiring in 1999. He also briefly worked for Air New England and Butler Aviation, both at LaGuardia Airport.
John was a member of the Somerset Presbyterian Church, the Retired United Airlines Employees Association (RUAEA) with whom he served as Vice President, the American Legion Post #478 Somerset where he was a Past Commander, and the Toy Train Operating Society for his love of model railroading. He also enjoyed spending time in his backyard, growing tomatoes in his garden and feeding the birds. Most of all, he enjoyed being a husband and father to his wife and daughters.
He is predeceased by his parents, John & Pearl Deily; and sister, Patricia Deily.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Kathleen; daughters, Jennifer Deily of Somerset and Jessica Deily of Belle Mead; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph H. & Barbara Deily of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; niece, Kelly Deily of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and cousin, Mary Wilson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 15th from 3 to 7 PM at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset. Funeral services to follow on Friday, February 16th at 10 AM at the funeral home with services continuing 11 AM at the Somerset Presbyterian Church. Burial to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Somerset.
In lieu of flowers donations in his loving memory can be made to a charity of your choice benefiting veterans or animals.
