John DeNicholas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. - Hopewell Junction on Sep. 12, 2025.
John DeNicholas, Jr., 82, of Lagrangeville, NY, and previously of Hopewell Jct., NY, and Yonkers, NY, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City surrounded by his family.

Born in Yonkers, NY June 18, 1943, he was the son of the late John DeNicholas, Sr. and Mary DeNicholas (Russo). He is also predeceased by his sister, Isabella DeNicholas. He is survived by his loving wife of over five decades, Ann Marie DeNicholas (Coppola) and their children, Joseph DeNicholas and his wife Susan, of Hopewell Jct., NY and Kathleen DeNicholas and her husband, Andrew Tavani of Ridgewood, NJ. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Blaec (Lauren), Julia, Mason, Alexander and Genevieve and his great-granddaughter, Harper. John is also survived by many extended family members and friends, many of whom were lifelong friends.

John attended Lincoln High School in Yonkers and was voted "best dressed," a testament to his enduring popularity and charm throughout his life. He served briefly in the U.S. Army Reserves before an accident resulted in his honorable discharge.

From early childhood, John worked alongside his father, grandfather and uncle at Nicholas Bros., Inc. of which he later became President. He had a deep passion for his work as a building mover and continued the thriving legacy of this five-generation business, stepping back only recently. John took immense pride in his numerous achievements which included the relocation, raising and preservation of massive historic buildings on estates and college campuses. Under John's direction, Nicholas Bros. successfully completed several of the most historic moves on record.

John was the type of person that people enjoyed being around and a cherished friend to many. With a quiet sense of humor, he enjoyed a good laugh, good food and a vodka on the rocks. A devoted Yankees and Giants fan, he spent considerable time as a youth in the stands at Yankee Stadium. He loved the Florida Gulf Coast and spending time boating with his family and friends. He valued hard work and perseverance, but always with humor, kindness and integrity.

John was deeply dedicated to his family. He was endlessly generous and an unwavering beacon of support for his children and grandchildren of whom he was deeply proud. Most of all, John enjoyed the simple pleasure of his family's company, often watching his grandchildren play baseball, spending cherished time babysitting them and hosting family get togethers.

His heartbroken family and friends will treasure his memory and miss him deeply.

Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, September 15th from 4 -7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, September 16th at 10 am at St. Denis Church, 604 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I´m sorry to hear of John´s passing. John and I met looking at a job we both were bidding on . I was excited to meet him, because I was impressed with the large buildings he had moved. Although it was a little awkward looking at the same job together at the same time, and I be much younger, he treated me with great respect. I am so pleased that I was able to meet and shake the hand of one of the giants in the house moving industry.

Johnny will be missed. My late brother Paul and myself Matthew spent many memorable days and nights cruising the neighborhood, going to Yankee Stadium, fishing down in Montauk Point and just hanging out. Later me and my wife had the pleasure of spending time with John and Ann Marie going to Atlantic City, the Berkshires, visiting them on Marco Island, and taking short trips together. He spent quality time with his family and friends, he will be missed!
