John DePaolo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peabody Funeral Homes & Crematorium - Derry on Mar. 19, 2026.
John DePaolo, 84, of Auburn, NH, passed away on Tuesday March 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family in the Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH. He was born on September 3, 1941 in Milford, MA, a son of the late John and Florence (Palleschi) DePaolo. John, a Vietnam Veteran (1969 - 1970), proudly served his country in the US Army for 24-years as a helicopter pilot. He led a life of service - first in the US Army, then as an air traffic controller for the FAA. The amount of pride he had for his military service was only equaled by the love he had for his family.

He is survived by his four daughters, Dawn Wheaton of Auburn, NH, Kathryn DePaolo-Baltazar of Puyallup, WA, Angela Ferreira of Salem, NH, and Michelle Troubetaris of Liverpool, NY; his son, Rinaldo DePaolo of Puyallup, WA; eight grandchildren, Donovan, Amelia, Leland, Enrico, Pedro, Giovanni, Dominic, and Abigail; his sister Ann Harris of Danvers, MA and two brothers, Alan DePaolo of Porter, ME and George DePaolo of Swampscott, MA; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara "Bonnie" (Ferguson) DePaolo in 2020 and by two brothers, Michael and Ronald DePaolo.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 10:00am in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy., Boscawen, NH with Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or NHSPCA, PO Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

I knew him as my best friend“s dad. In my teen years I saw him as gruff, but as I grew older I came to see a man of quiet strength, courage, and unwavering dedication to his family. As a Vietnam veteran who flew Hueys in service to his country, he carried both bravery and sacrifice with humility-something for which I will always be grateful. It only just occurred to me that he may have provided air cover for my own dad, who was boots on the ground in Vietnam-brothers in war.

He showed what it meant to be steady and dependable, leading not with words but through example. He also had a soft spot for the family pets, caring for them with kindness and great care that revealed another side of his character.

His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the love of country he embodied, and the care he showed-to both people and animals alike. Thank you, John.
