John Dice Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel on Jan. 14, 2026.
Jack Dice passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2025 at the age of 91. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska to the late Richard and Elizabeth Dice. The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1936. Jack attended Dowling High School and graduated from Drake University with a BA degree in business. Upon graduation he was employed by Riekes & Sons Container Company.

In 1960 he met his future wife, Rosalie, on a blind date. They were married in 1961 and spent 64 happy years together. Jack loved being a father to their two sons, John (Jody) of Danville and Tim of Seattle. He enjoyed family ski trips, world travel, and fishing trips with his friends.

In 1971 Jack and the family moved to California, where he was named District Manager for Riekes in Northern California. He played a part in the elevation of California wines to global renown with his innovations in bottling.

Jack began a second career in the 1980s as a general contractor specializing in windows. After retirement, Jack started his third and most rewarding career, helping to feed the hungry and unhoused people of Alameda County. Jack was truly at his best during the 19 years he spent as "The Muffin Man", organizing and implementing the transportation of food from multiple outlets in Contra Costa to shelters and food banks in Oakland. What started as a few men loading up their vehicles at bakeries and grocers in Lamorinda, grew to an organization with over 80 men and women volunteers, now known as the "Muffin People." He received lifetime achievement awards from local government agencies as well as from the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Mary's Center. He also volunteered in his church community with many outreach programs as well as being an officer in the Men's Club. He always said he was most rewarded by the friendships he built during these years of service.

Jack is predeceased by his brother, Jim. He is survived by his loving wife, his two sons, his granddaughters, Rachel and Hannah, and his beloved sister, Mary Kay Aldrich.

A memorial mass will be held January 23rd at 10:15 at St. Monica Catholic Church in Moraga.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Jack's memory, to Hospice of the East Bay or a charity of your choice.

Dear Rosalie, John and Tim-

Jack, my brother-in-law, had a very special way that inspired people who knew him..... the qualities that made him such a good person have left me with a number of memories.....memories that stretch back all the way to the wedding in October of 1961...over 65 years ago.

May your own precious memories be a comfort to you now and throughout the days to come.

I am a better person because of Jack Dice..... Thanks for sharing him with me.
