John "Jack" Dooling, 81, of East Syracuse, NY passed away on May 5, 2025. He was born in Syracuse on February 3, 1944 and was the son of David and Eleanor (Murphy) Dooling. He is survived by his wife, Pam (Dicob) Dooling; his sons, James, Michael, Paul (Susan), Joseph (Cassie) and Jason Staudt (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Sean, Samantha, David, Allie, Jackson, Grace and Lucas and Luke and Shane Staudt. Jack was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament and St. John the Evangelist High School. He was a member, Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Matthew's Church in East Syracuse. He spent the last 37 years of his professional career at Crouse Hinds in various Procurement roles until his retirement in 2006. It turns out that retirement didn't suit him, and Jack began multiple second careers. First as a volunteer with numerous charities where he was especially passionate in his efforts to sponsor multiple displaced Ukrainian families in settling to Central New York. He spent countless hours assisting at Loretto in Syracuse while his efforts with Vera House were so extensive, that in 2010 they recognized him with their "Outstanding Contributions Award". Along with that, Jack successfully ran for, and was elected as Town Counciler to the DeWitt Town Board in 2012. He served for two additional terms and was instrumental in so many of the decisions that benefited his town. He was active in that role at the time of his passing. Beyond his professional and civic duties, he was a lifelong coach and mentor to countless young people in his community including: East Syracuse's Pop Warner (football), Little League (baseball), and the St. Matthew's CYO (basketball). Jack was so influenced by those who had given so much of their time coaching him when he was young, that he took great pride that his former players still called him "Coach", even when they were adults. There were many others, who in respect, referred to him as either "The Original Dools" or "The East Syracuse Legend". His sports fandom was a big part of his free time which was always focused on Syracuse University's Football and Basketball teams where he was a season ticket holder for decades and used a lot of his vacations to travel to many of their Bowl games and Final Fours. He picked up Lacrosse as a third sport later in life and followed that with equal intensity which included he and Pam making dozens of multi-state drives to Maryland over the last five years to be sure to see them in-person. Calling Hours will be from 9-11 am on Friday May 9t at St. Matthew's Church in East Syracuse. The Funeral Mass will be immediately afterward at 11am. There will be a private Burial Service at St. Mary's in DeWitt. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made out to Friends of DeWitt Parks & Recreation (Carrier Park), 5400 Butternut Drive, East Syracuse, NY 13057. Arrangements are with Delaney Greabell Adydan Funeral Home, East Syracuse.
