June 7, 1957 – November 25, 2024
John Joseph Downer, age 67, of Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, with his daughter, Danielle, and wife, Debbie, by his side. Born on June 7, 1957, John's life was filled with love, laughter, and adventure. His impact was felt by all who crossed his path, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
John is survived by his wife, Debbie Downer; daughter, Danielle Hood; son-in-law, Tony Hood; and his cherished grandchildren, Nora and Nolan Hood. He was also a beloved brother, friend, and a "legend" to many.
John was a mentor, leader, and a man who left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered.
John never met a stranger. Whether at a restaurant, store, or on the sidewalk, he could-and would-talk to anyone. At first, people might give him a sideways glance for interrupting their conversation, but by the end, they were best friends. He had a remarkable ability to transform mundane moments into unforgettable ones. John was known for his generosity and giving spirit. He had a heart as big as his personality, always willing to help those in need.
John was a teacher in every sense of the word, pushing others toward becoming their best selves. Whether at home, at work, or out in the world, his leadership and wisdom left a lasting impression. As a leader, mentor, and friend, John was always ready to lend a hand, offer guidance, or share a laugh. He made everyone feel valued, and his influence will continue to resonate in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
John was deeply committed to his work, the people he worked with at Miller Bros, and his extended "tire" family beyond the company. As a successful business owner with a brilliant mind, he viewed the company not just as a business but as his passion. In 1994, John took over Miller Bros and grew it from a $750K company to a $40 million leader in the off-the-road and mining tire industry in the Southeast. Those he worked with were family, and his generosity, spirit, and unwavering dedication to those he loved and worked with made him stand out in everything he did. His leadership and vision helped shape the success of the company, and his legacy, both personally and professionally, will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John had many passions, including his love for motorcycles, classic cars, and tires-of course (insert Tim Allen grunt), which he lovingly referred to as his "toys." He cherished smooth rides, sharing bowls of Cheerios with his grandson, getting into too much trouble with the boys, and always enjoying a good dirty joke. Music played a big role in his life as well; he loved playing his music loud and sharing his favorite songs with others. The soundtrack of his life spanned every genre and was filled with songs that made him laugh, cry, and connect with those around him. In his final moments, the song "The Universal Sound" played, a fitting tribute to a man who embraced life with joy and conviction. The universal sound John leaves behind is one of laughter.
John had an unparalleled ability to fix anything-whether it was a car, a problem, or something off the "honey-do" list. Always eager to learn and share his knowledge, he passed on his wisdom to everyone he met. A "one-man show," John had an incredible ability to entertain, always ready with a joke or witty comment to brighten the room. His humor and larger-than-life personality made him the center of attention at every gathering. John loved a good party and never shied away from a good time. He had an unrivaled ability to keep the energy high and the laughter rolling. His charisma drew people in and made everyone feel like part of the celebration. Known for his humor and positivity, John worked hard and played hard, embracing life with equal passion in both his professional and personal pursuits. His iconic quotes and legendary presence will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.
As Hunter S. Thompson famously put it, "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride.'" John lived this philosophy every day. With passion, energy, and a zest for life, he made every moment an adventure.
John Downer, you were truly "Juan in a million." Your impact on this world will never be forgotten. We love you, and your spirit will live on in our hearts always.
In tribute to the legend that was John Downer, we raise a beer (or a shot of Jack Fire) and salute the unforgettable, one-of-a-kind man who taught us how to live life to the fullest. Enjoy the ride, brother!
Let us find comfort in one of John's favorite songs, "Where Rainbows Never Die." We take solace in knowing that John has made his "way across the fields of cotton, waded through muddy waters one last time, and come out clean when he reached the other side, to waste away the sunsets, where rainbows never die."
John's family invites everyone to gather to honor him on December 14th at 1:00 PM at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, located at 2405 Philippe Parkway, Safety Harbor, FL 34695, with a joyful celebration to follow at John and Debbie's house. Please come dressed comfortably and ready to party as hard as John would have.
