John Dyer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - Great Bridge Chapel on Mar. 6, 2026.
John Lewis Dyer Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 26th, 2026 at the age of 77. John was known for his kindness, positivity, generosity, and willingness to help others.

John's family was his pride and joy. Everything he did was for them. John is survived by his wife of over 50 years Xandra, two sons John-Mark and Christian, four grandchildren Ethan, Emma, Evan, and Jack, his younger sister Karen, and his younger brother James, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, John and Dorothy Dyer.

John spent most of his twenties in dedicated service to the U.S. Army Reserve. He served honorably as the Finance Sergeant for the 1st Battalion, Headquarters 4th Brigade (CST) 80th Division (TNG), a role that defined his early years and reflected his lifelong commitment to his country.

John was a "Plank Owner" of COMNAVSURFLANT meaning he was there when the command was first established back in 1973. He worked his way up to GS-13 grade as a Civil Servant supporting the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet as a computer programmer alongside other roles over his 30 years of dedicated service. During this time, he received numerous civil service awards for programs he wrote and projects he oversaw. Upon his "retirement", he immediately returned to work the next day, as a contractor, with Delphinus Engineering, doing the same job at the same desk in order to continue his role providing assistance and support of the Atlantic Fleet until the day he passed.

He had a wide variety of interests over the years. Early on, he drove a motorcycle and played in a rock band. Later, he was a part of a duck pin bowling league and even helped lead the dance ministry at his church with his wife. He had a passion for computers and technology that he passed on to both of his sons. He was an avid football fan. His teams were the Kansas City Chiefs and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

He loved the Lord with all his heart. He accepted Jesus as his savior in 1974, and spent the rest of his life dedicated to the church. For over 25 years, he was heavily involved in various ministries, including teaching and performing in worship, dance, and drama, not only in his home church but reaching out to different denominations in our community and providing care and service in multiple facets of public outreach as well. He was the perfect example of how a Christian should live his life and treat others.

For all who knew him, he will be loved dearly and missed always. Join us in celebrating his life on March 14th at 1:30 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home's Great Bridge location at 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322.
