John R Eckhard

John R. Eckhard, 72, of Lexington Ave., Oneida, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025, at his home.
He was born on December 18, 1952, in Oneida, the son of Robert F. and Harriet L. (Neadeau) Eckhard. John grew up in Durhamville before moving to Oneida. He was a graduate of Oneida High School and went on to receive his associate's degree from MVCC in Accounting.
On January 6, 1970, John proudly enlisted in the United States Navy where he went to submarine school and was then stationed on the USS Narwhal and USS Billfish. He was honorably discharged on December 14, 1973, and subsequently served in the US Naval Reserves.
John was employed by Campany Roofing in Oneida for over forty-five years, retiring in 2019.
Johnny Ray, known for his quick wit and infectious sense of humor, possessed a remarkable ability to make anyone laugh. He reveled in having a good time whenever he could and cherished being around people.
Surviving are two sons, John C. Eckhard, of Oneida, and Robert C. Eckhard (fiancé, Kelsey Hagen), of Saratoga Springs; one granddaughter on the way; a brother, James Eckhard (wife, Jean Eckhard) of Oneida; his close friend, Helen Mauria; many nieces and nephews whom he loved including nephew, Bobby Carpenter.
John's family wants to express their heartfelt gratitude to his many caregivers, including Rose Musolino, his ex-wife Dorie Whelsky, his niece Linda Hopkins, and Barbara Babcock. They also want to thank the Campany Family & Crew, Gerry Vanderwerken, JK, Stevie, Joe Cleary, and the many other friends for their unwavering kindness, compassion, and loving friendship throughout the years.
Family and friends are invited and may call on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 12:00 (noon) to 2:00 p.m. at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida.
