John E. Edmundson, 86, of Lafayette, passed away at 9:39 PM Friday, May 23, at Franciscan Health Lafayette. He was born in Altamont, IL on Sept. 11, 1938, the son of the late Claude L. and Mildred E. (Drysdale) Edmundson. He was a 1956 graduate of El Campo High School in Texas. John married Carol A. Edmundson at St. Lawrence Church in Lafayette Sept. 14,1957 and she preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2024.
For nearly five decades, John dedicated his professional life to Fauber/Milestone, serving as a heavy equipment mechanic and retiring in 2005. His career is a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to his trade. John was also a proud member of the Local 135 Teamsters, joining the union in September of 1997.
Though John was referred to as a “gentle giant”, those who knew him understood that beneath his calm demeanor lay a fierce protectiveness for his loved ones. He had a remarkable ability to navigate life with a balance of strength and tenderness. One of John’s proudest accomplishments was his deep love for his great-grandchildren, whom he adored. They could do no wrong in his eyes. His love and support were cornerstones of his family life, and he will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his son, Aidyn Edmundson (Teresa); daughter, Tammy Guenther (Jr.); brother, Bill Edmundson (Diane); special aunt, Aimee Fields; Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, J. Welsh, Emily Claton (Trevor), Kayla Fuqua (Ben), Ashley Eads (Nathan), Shelby Luedtke (Michael), Andreanna Maynor (John), Steven Edmundson, Chloe Edmundson, Diederich Brewer, Tre Edmundson, Malakie Edmunson, Layton Edmundson, Oliva Edmundson; 9 great-grandchildren, Bentley, Paisley, Remington, Audrey, Emery, Ronnie, Gerard, Grace, Johnnie, Amira, LIlli, Emory, Naomi and J.J.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Penny Welsh Prather; great-grandson, “Bubba” Edmundson; brothers, Dick & Ron Edmundson.
Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 4 until 7 PM Thursday, May 29. Another visitation will be held from 11AM until time of service at 12 noon at the funeral home on Friday, May 30 with Rev. Zachary Rainey officiating. Interment following in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to: The Penny Prather Memorial Fund.
