John Thomas Fikes, 48, of Hewitt passed away Saturday, March 22, 2025 at his residence. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Waco Memorial Funeral Home with interment to follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, prior to the service on Wednesday.
John Thomas Fikes was born in Waco, Texas on a Tuesday morning in December, on the 28th at 5:01am at the old Hillcrest Hospital. He weighed in at 9lbs.
John was an athletic child. At the age of 8 he participated in soccer and from the age of 9 to 15 he played football for Tennyson and Midway. He began to show an interest in archery when he turned 14. He excelled at it, often being invited by others at the range to join their teams for the day. Beating Ted Nugent in a competition match was definitely a highlight of that time. He and his sister, Melissa, had the best time attending competitions together. John had just gotten a new bow but never had the chance to use it.
John also enjoyed bowling and joined his uncle for a tournament in San Antonio. When a team member didn’t show, John was happy to step in, helping to lead the team to victory.
He LOVED racing and became interested in dirt track racing early on. He did quite well, winning first place once and placing in the top five multiple times, winning several trophies. One of the best days of John’s life was the day he went was able to get behind the wheel of a racecar at Texas Motor Speedway during a NASCAR event, a Christmas gift from his mom that he cherished dearly. His big sister Becky was by his side during some of his racing events. She was like his second mom and helped him with so many things during his lifetime.
John loved animals and enjoyed the company of his two dogs and his cat.
Family was important to John, and he loved them dearly. He leaves behind his mother, Donna Gutierrez; his sisters, Becky Kay Fikes and Aimee Melissa Munn and her husband, Chip; his nephew, Clark Munn, who he was so proud of; and his great niece, Adelynn Melissa Munn, who he thought was the cutest little girl ever! He is also survived by his father, John D. Fikes of Ogelsby and many cousins and friends.
John had great affection for his Papa Thomas and Grandma Thomas. He and his friends would go to their house for sleepovers or to eat. Both put up with the boys because at least they knew where they were and that they were safe. His grandparents, William Henry Thomas, Jr. and Bettye Laverne Thomas preceded him in death, as did his Grandma Fikes, Grandpa Fikes, and his uncle, William Allen Thomas.
John spent a few years working at Lorena Quick Lube, followed by Toyota. Eventually he opened his own businesses, A-1 Tree Service and most recently Fikes Tangibles.
John will be deeply missed by his family and his memory will live on forever in their hearts.
