Newcomer Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel - PowellJohn M. Fill, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on October 10, 2024. Born in North Royalton, Ohio, to John Fill, Sr. and Ann Laskodi-Fill, John lived a life marked by athletic achievement, devoted to teaching, and unwavering love for his family, students, and faith.
A proud graduate of Cuyahoga Heights High School (Class of 1962), John excelled on the football field and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2001. He continued his football journey at The Ohio State University (1963-1967), playing under the legendary coach Woody Hayes and serving as team co-captain. His leadership earned him a seat at OSU Captain's Breakfasts—a tradition he cherished.
John donated his body to the OSU Division of Anatomy Body Donation Program, contributing to concussion research in football- an act born from his own experience with a traumatic concussion that led to an 8-year battle with dementia.
He earned his master's degree from Ohio University and began a 35-year teaching career at Westerville South High School, where he served as a beloved Physical Education and Health teacher, football coach, and boys' tennis coach. Even after retirement, John remained a fixture on the tennis courts, continuing to coach and inspire. His passion for coaching extended far beyond sports—he helped shape the character and futures of countless young men.
John's life was full: a devoted fan of Buckeye football, an avid reader and tennis player, and a man who found great joy in traveling with his beloved wife of 30 years, Lorette Bragg-Fill. Tough as nails, yet endlessly inspiring and endearing, John's presence left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Loretta Bragg-Fill; sisters Darlene (Dave) Pristash and Phyllis (Bill) Balazs; daughter Alescia Fill (Joe Watkins); stepdaughters Debra (Rob) Rito and Geannette (Larry) Powell; stepson Mike (Heidi) Wills; granddaughters Juanita and Anna Fill; great-grandchildren Josh Jr., Journie, Rosa, and Ryleigh; step-grandchildren Ryan, Tiffany, Constance, Wesley, Cameron, Brittany, Dusty, and Jacob; his dear friend Doug Kerns; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and former students.
John's life was one of service, dedication, and love. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
A memorial gathering will take place at Newcomer Funeral Home Powell Chapel from 5 PM to 6:30 PM, 10051 Brewster Lane, Powell, OH 43065, followed by a memorial service at 6:30 PM.
