Coach Jack Flanagan was my water polo and swim team coach and one of the most influential figures in my young life while I attended Diablo Valley College in 1969-1971. Jack was such a guiding force for me those two years, as an inspirational coach who tried to get me to realize my potential in the pool and in life. Jack helped me develop discipline and learn what hard work was all about. Jack´s coaching helped me make the 1970 All Conference second team in water polo and All American Honors in swimming in 1971. Coach Flanagan was also instrumental in helping me deal with the sudden death of my best friend, Dick Arz in the spring of 1971. After giving me a few days off from the swim team to deal with Dick´s death, he got me back in the pool which helped me deal with the loss and my depression, when I could have gone off the deep end. I also remember when Jack was so excited for me, after I was recruited by San Diego St to play water polo with my 1969 water polo teammates, Tom Fogarty, Bill Nelson and Keith Pringle.
Rest in Peace Coach.
