John Anthony Franco was born in Los Angeles, California, on November 25, 1963, to Loretta Joan and Carlos Antonio Franco. He grew up in Whittier, California, where he attended Lydia Jackson and Mar Vista Elementary Schools, East Whittier Junior High, and California High School.

As a child and teenager, John played Little League baseball, participated in Scouts, and developed a strong talent for tennis during his high school years. He was passionate about fitness and bodybuilding, spending several years competing in the sport. It was during this time that John was often called "Big John," although to many family members he was "John John."

John loved Southern California, especially the beach, where he learned to surf. He was also a devoted self-educator and lifelong learner. A voracious reader, he was never intimidated by a thick book. While he cherished his father, Carlos (Tony) Franco, it was through his stepfather, Jim Bayly, that John developed a deep passion for history, scripture, government, and politics-an interest that continued throughout his life. Although John often had a serious demeanor, he also had a great sense of humor, and knew how to laugh and pull one over on you! He loved talking about memories of his friends and experiences from childhood days, and his desire to move back to Southern California.

He worked in security for much of his career. Later in life, John moved to Orem, Utah, to be near his mother. There, he met the love of his life, Ferrin Grandstaff. They were married in March 2020. John went on to work in security for the State of Utah, spending many days at the Utah State Capitol.

John passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, from late-stage kidney failure, at the age of 61.

He is survived by his wife, Ferrin Grandstaff; his sisters, Cindy Zimmerman (Sterling) and Kerri Eliason (Adam); and his brother, Andy Franco (Lyn). He also leaves behind nine nieces and nephews, ranging in age from 3 to 50 years old.

John loved his family and cherished his close friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
