John Funchess Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - New Haven on Feb. 24, 2026.
John Funchess, 95, better known as Jack, a shining example of love, dedication, and perseverance, was born on March 8, 1930, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to John Henry Funchess and Mable Marie Whitmore. As the eldest of three children, he paved the way for others to follow. He entered into eternal rest on February 10, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

With a career spanning multiple decades, John worked tirelessly at St. Johnsbury Trucking Company, ascending to the role of foreman and earning the respect of his peers. His dedication to his work and community was unwavering. He went on to become a Union Steward for Teamsters Union Local 728, touching countless lives along the way. His 32nd Degree Mason affiliation with Widow Son Lodge #1 was a testament to his commitment to spiritual growth and brotherhood. As a lifetime member of Mt. Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, John found solace in his faith and served selflessly as church treasurer, as well as a member of the Stewards Board and the Usher Board.

John's life was a celebration of love, family, and friendship. He adored spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who cherished him deeply in return. His passions included fishing and visiting casinos, but his greatest joy came from the time he spent with those he loved.

Though he has departed this world, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He is survived by his son, John Allen Funchess, and Marcia Dunbar of Fayetteville, Georgia; daughters Charlene Carraway; Elaine and CleEsther Funchess of New Haven, Connecticut; Ramona Funchess of Hamden, Connecticut; and Rayvonne Salter of West Haven, Connecticut. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Callie Funchess; his sisters, Mildred Hollenback and Marie Funchess; his son Ronnie Funchess; and his daughter Darlene Murray.
