John Gaier Obituary

Gaier, John Anthony "Tony"

Gaier, John Anthony "Tony", 92, of Springfield, Ohio passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lucille (Spang); brothers, Raymond and Donald; sisters, Clare May and Joan; and wife of 58 years, Mary Sue (Wright). He is survived by his wife Beverly (Powell); children, Paul, Amy (Dave), Mark (Lisa), and Lucille "Marie" Pace; grandchildren, Salina, Jaron (Maggie), Jacob (Samantha), Eli, Bridget, Gabrielle, Jude, Gianna, and Sophia; as well as great-grandsons, Isador, Raymond, Atticus and Cyrus. Tony is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. Tony loved his late-in-life family: Linda (Alan) Swearingen, Andrew (Lori) Powell, and Christopher Powell (deceased), as well as grandchildren, Seth, Kyle, Evan, Paige and Bobby. Tony always would say he was the luckiest guy in the world. He was a man of strong faith and a lifelong member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. His passion and gratitude for his family and his community was evident as he was a veteran of the United States Army and volunteered with numerous organizations such as Mercy Hospital, Community and Springfield Regional Hospital, the Kuss Performing Arts Center, as well as mentoring and tutoring students at The Literacy Center and teaching CCD at St. Bernard Church. He was a typesetter for 38 years at the Springfield News and Sun. Following retirement from the newspaper, his captivating and infectious smile could be seen in the halls of many of the Springfield area schools where he spent 16 years as a substitute teacher. When not teaching or volunteering you could find him out on a run as he became an avid 5K runner later in life. He and Bev also enjoyed traveling with trips to Florida and NYC, and even walking the Brooklyn Bridge. He loved their many day trips just driving the nearby countryside - usually ending with a milkshake or a glass of wine. The family would like to thank Ohio Valley Hospice and the staff at Forest Glen and Wooded Glen for their passionate and loving care for Tony and his entire family. Tony's civic nature called him to donate his body to Wright State University Department of Anatomy. A burial service will be held at a later date. Please join the family for a Memorial Mass for Tony on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 10:30am in St. Bernard Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Bernard Catholic Church or to a charity of choice. Arrangements by CONROY FUNERAL HOME.
