John Gallant Obituary

John Prospere Gallant of Pownal, VT, passed away at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington on October 14, 2024 at the age of 97. John was born on March 26, 1927, in Shaftsbury, VT to Prospere and Irene (Daniels) Gallant. He married Jennie May Watrous on November 9, 1957.

He was a veteran of World War II, honorably serving in the Navy.

John was employed as a Millwright for many years at the Eveready Battery plant (formerly Union Carbide) in Bennington, VT. In his younger years he was kept busy providing for his family, but there are many pleasant memories of Sunday picnics, snowmobile rides, and visits to the drive-in movie theaters. He was an avid cribbage player, teaching all his children and many grandchildren how to play, (as well as any other willing person) so that he would always have a ready opponent at any visit.

He survived teaching all his children how to drive stick shift and learned to pilot a single engine plane, thrilling his passengers with trips around the local area. He also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and had favorite dogs after he retired.

John is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Jennie, his children Sandy (Donny) Latif of Shaftsbury, VT, Jeffrey (Joanne) Gallant of Terre Haute, IN, Cathy (Rick) Harrington of Pownal, VT, Debra Brock of Pownal, VT, and Tina (Nancy Brown) Gallant of Pownal, VT, a daughter-in-law, Pat Gallant of Bennington, VT, his grandchildren; Bridget Gallant, Ashley Walker, Chris Gallant, Ryan Latif, Courtney Brittain, Jordan Gallant, Jayla Gallant, Meagan Snide, Richard Harrington, Calla Harrington, Lucas Harrington and Jasmine Brock, 15 great-grandchildren, his siblings; Richard Gallant of Shaftsbury, VT, Shirley Roewe of Oklahoma and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his son, Chris Gallant, his sister Ruth Gallant, brothers Ray and Gerald Gallant, brother-in-law and sister-in law Don and June Perrott, his nephews Raymie, David and Paul Gallant, and his niece Mary Jane Perrott.

The family will receive family and friends at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington, VT on Saturday November 2, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. A memorial service will be held immediately following calling hours. The burial service will occur at a future date.

Memorial donations may be made to Second Chance Animal Center through the office of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington.

Oh my gosh, John! I have thought of him often since working with him at Eveready! He was a delight to know. Just an intelligent guy that was always willing to show you just how smart his was with his talents. Always enjoyed our conversations.

To John's family I express my regrets for your loss. Hope there are many pleasant memories to get you through. It is sad day as we have lost another member of the Greatest Generation. To have taken part, in a herculean event, that literally changed the world is incredible. To come back home and lead the life he did is motivational. A grand example for all of us to aspire too. Thank you for your service to our Country during it's time of need. Your service is appreciated. Well done Shipmate, your tour is completed. You are relieved. Rest in peace. Wishing you Fair Winds and Following Seas.
