John Gansbauer Obituary

Visit the Grayson Funeral Home - Charlestown website to view the full obituary.

John Robert Gansbauer (age 70), of Charlestown, Indiana, “finally kicked the bucket” on September 11, 2025, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. John was born on January 13, 1955, to Lola Louise and Francis Gansbauer. He grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where he hiked up hill both ways to school at Wichita High School South.

He spent much of his working life driving truck and sharing his opinion about people who didn’t know how to drive. He retired at age 62, turning his focus to woodworking, dressing his yard monkey, and chasing squirrels off the bird feeder.

More than anything, John loved spending time with the love of his life, Peggy, who should always remember “He loves me,” no matter the petal. He was also 9 toes down the best dad and “papa” there ever was.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Lola Louise Gansbauer, and his brother, Thomas Gansbauer.

He is survived by his wife, Laura “Peggy” Gansbauer; his children Doria Gansbauer, Erica Gansbauer, Myron Gansbauer, Cynthia Gansbauer, and “Big” Mike (Jess) Bearup; his sister Debra (Jim) Ralston; his grandchildren Chayton Bolden, Michael Wyatt, and Lola Gansbauer; and his cat, Max.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 16, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. Larry Poe and Jim Wiewel will share a few words beginning at 5:30, with a reception to follow. The gathering will be a potluck. Please bring both a dish and a memory to share.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
