John Garrett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ames Funeral Home, Inc. on Jan. 26, 2024.
Early Sunday morning, January 21, 2024, God called home to rest our beloved John Delwin Garrett, after a lengthy illness. John was born in Washington, D.C. on September 6, 1954, to the late John and Susie Garrett.
John attended District of Columbia public schools and later completed Deborah Cannon Wolfe High School, Shorter, Alabama in 1973. After graduating from high school Johnny returned to Washington, D.C. and joined the Job Corp. During Johnny's time in Job Corp, he trained in computer technology and learned how to build and maintain computer systems. Johnny used his entrepreneurial skills to work in his chosen field. John's sister Iris introduced him to her good friend Gayla and the pair hit it off instantly. John and Gayla were an inseparable pair and later married, claiming twenty-five years of marriage. In 1999 with a broken heart, he lost his beloved Gayla Diane (McMillan).
John was a modern-day Renaissance person, with different talents, who could fix anything. He was always the life of the party. With his charismatic charm and carefree personality, he made friends wherever he went. Probably, giving you a crazy nickname after you met him.
John loved his family with his whole heart and being Granddaddy was his greatest joy. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: two children Delwin K. Garrett (Joy R. Garrett Bey), Letta R. Garrett -Mann (Bryan K. Mann, Sr), and his beloved good friend Carla Ann Hamilton. Seven grandchildren Madyson K. Garrett, Joel A. Garza, Jr. USMC, Khalis J. Garrett Bey, Domynik S. Garza, Maliyah D. Garza, Jahmil K. Garrett Bey, Devyn R. Garrett Bey, and Bryan Mann, Jr. and two great grandchildren Rhydre N. Bishop and River N. Garrett. Two sisters Iris B. Garrett, Edna S. (Ernest M.) King, one brother Olius Harris, two sisters-in-law Beverly McMillan Selma AL and Deborah S. Harris Tuskegee AL, one brother-in-law Jerome R. Green, Sr. El Paso TX, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Johnny's predeceased family members are two sisters Joan V. Bethel and his beloved twin Jarita D. Green, three brothers James E., Harry J., and Ordis Harris.
