Sadly, on the evening of December 29, 2024, John Clinton Garrett unexpectedly passed away. He was 66 years old.
John was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Robert and Ida Garrett on September 4, 1958. He is survived by his sisters, Margaret (Gene) and Debra Blett; nieces, Jennifer Vankersen, Amanda Osterling, Becky Blett; nephews, Jeffrey Homan, Jeremy Homan, Matthew Blett, and Christopher Blett, and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Garrett, his mother, Ida Taylor, stepfather, Jack Taylor, and girlfriend, Debbie Kline.
John attended Galesburg-Augusta schools. He lived in the area working at Hi-Lex Corporation until 1990. John enjoyed bowling, playing the lottery, and watching sports. He loved the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. His Sundays were planned around watching the Nascar races with his girlfriend, Debbie. In 1989, John moved to Puryear, Tennessee, where he lived until 2017. He then returned to Galesburg to care for his mother, Ida, and his stepfather, Jack Taylor, until their deaths in 2023. In April of 2023, John met Debbie Kline. They quickly bonded and became soul mates. Debbie was very outgoing and brought out the best in him. He loved her very much, and unfortunately, he became her caregiver as she lost her battle to cancer. Debbie passed on November 26, 2024, leaving John with a broken heart. He missed her terribly. But now, by the grace of God, they are together again. John may have been taken from us way too soon, but his spirit will live on in the memories we cherish and the love we shared.
A celebration of John's life will be held at the Augusta VFW on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Personal messages for John's family may be shared at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
